Scecina opens the season with a win
Senior Trinity Eckerty stole the show in the opening game for the Crusders' 2018 Campaign. The short stop drove in five runs with three hits, including a homerun, to lead her team to an 18-8 victory over Milan. Milan started off the action with three runs in the first, but Scecina took their cuts in the bottom half of the inning and put up a six spot. This lead would continue to bloom throughout the game with the help of sixteen hits by the home team. Emily McDonald was the winning pitcher for Scecina, where she utilized her defense to escape some jams and allow the offense to lead the way. Kristina Streeval, Allie Owens, Cierra Ash, and Jayla Shelton all racked up multiple hits to help seal an opening victory.
crusaders capture state championship
The Scecina Crusaders observed a familiar opponent for the 2A State Championship game sitting across the field at Ben Davis High School, Elwood, the top ranked team they swept in a double header a month ago. Trying to beat a team three times is no easy task and one Scecina would have to do if they wanted their third State Championship.
The first two innings was the same for both teams, having runners on and not being able to have a timely hit to score a run. However, with two outs in the third, Kaylyn Linder reached on a base hit and then came around to score the game's first run from a Trinity Eckerty double to the fence. Sara Beers then came to the dish and switched spots with Eckerty to score the second run, while Emma Deery did the exact same to give Scecina a 3-0 lead. Elwood came up to the plate in that same inning and was only able to score a run from a sacrifice fly. In the fifth inning, pitcher Cassie Smith and her defense were able to work out of another jam and only surrender one run to hold on to the lead.
Only up a run, Scecina knew it had to score some insurance runs. Cassie Smith led the inning off with a bloop single to the outfield and then Cali Burgess delivered a two out infield single that hit off of third base. With two down and two on, Linder came to the plate and drove in both runners with a double in the gap. Eckerty then stepped in the box and was able to tack on another run with a double off the center field fence. Elwood having one more chance, were able to load the bases, but Cassie Smith doing it all day, tip-toed that fine line and was able to work her magic to hold the Panthers.
At the end of the game, the scoreboard read Scecina 6 and Elwood 2, allowing the Crusaders to capture their third State Championship! After the game, the IHSAA along with members of the school, nominate a member of the winning team to receive the Mental Attitude Award. The 2017 2A recipient was Rachel Cox, one who truly excels both inside and outside the classroom.
With the season coming to an end, we would like to thank all of Crusader families, friends and fans for their support and help with the season. We would not have been able to accomplish all of our goals without you. Additionally, best of luck to our seniors, Kaylyn, Sara, Cassie, Alexis, Cali and Rachel! We wish you all the best and will meet up again in the Fall to celebrate this major accomplishment!
